Sands Queensland is a volunteer based organisation and relies heavily on the dedication of its valued volunteers to provide the level of services that parents and their families need when they experience the death of their baby.
The effort and the availability of our volunteers vary considerably. Some volunteers have full time careers and can only contribute after hours or on weekends. Others may have a more flexible lifestyle and may be able to give more freely of their time and energy. Any contribution is valued.
The activities that our volunteers are involved in are varied and include the following:
- Office work including typing, filing, brochure folding
- Newsletter production
- Management Committee positions
- Helping out at coffee mornings and night support meetings
- Working Bees
There is something there for everyone. There is no age limit on our volunteers and no activity is limited to men or women. From time to time Sands Queensland will ask for volunteer contributions through the newsletter for particular events. All our volunteers receive training if needed, in the tasks they choose to undertake.
The Sands house is located at 505 Bowen Terrace, New Farm. There is no restriction on parking in the area and there are bus services that run to and from Fortitude Valley. The City Cat is a ten-minute walk from the house. The UBD reference is Map 19 L 20.
Why Become a Volunteer?
Many of our volunteers find that volunteering gives them a great sense of satisfaction. They feel that they are able to contribute, to give back to an organisation that has supported them.
Some volunteers also feel they are contributing by ensuring that future parents and their families who experience the death of their baby are given the support and services they need during their grief journey. They may feel they are making a difference in the lives of bereaved parents and their families.
How to Become a Volunteer
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer you can register your interest by contacting the office.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Sands Queensland and are treasured. Giving is good for the soul and good for your health and a lovely way to honour your baby's memory.

Becoming a parent supporter can be both a rewarding and challenging experience. Parent supporters provide peer support to the hundreds of requests for support Sands Queensland receives each year from bereaved parents.
To become a parent supporter you must be a bereaved parent and attend parent supporter training provided by Sands Queensland.
The Sands Queensland parent supporter training equips volunteers to:
- Respond to calls from bereaved parents on the 1300 0 SANDS support line
- Respond to email requests for support
- Facilitate support groups
- Respond to the guidelines and fulfil reporting requirements set by Sands Queensland.
If you would like to become a parent supporter please contact the Sands Queensland office.
